Media homophobia used to be worse than it is now in my opinion. Although there is always room for improvement. Not only are gay couples on television shows, but some are shown not as the stereotypical over-dramatic, but as real people with jobs who contribute to society.
This is a new TV show called Sirens on USA. Not only does it have a black man as a main character, but he is also a gay black man. And showing a gay black man as someone who could be the difference for you between life and death- and that gives him a sort of power. Also on this show- another of the EMT's is a asexual woman. Asexuality isn't always accepted by people as being a legitimate sexuality. They think that they just haven't found the right person yet or something dumb like that. But the way these characters are portrayed by the show is that yes they are people-just like everyone else and they give such a huge sense of normality to it that it just makes me really happy to see a show like this.
When you clock the button above it takes you to an article written about Derrick Gordon being the first college basketball player to come out. This article is really inspiring and isn't a long read.
At the past 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi Russia, many companies and athletes alike blatantly showed their support for gay rights. Google was one of those companies who did this. I thought it was really cool of people to get together and show how much they supported it, despite the backlash they might receive.
The button above goes to another article from Outsports.com where gay and straight soccer fans come together to try and get the World Cup stripped from Russia. This article talks about how there is a petition to move the 2018 World Cup from Russia because of their lack of human rights laws.
This button leads to a scholars journal written about how gays are portrayed in the media. It is a reference I am using in my research paper for my UI382 class and it has many good points.
On Youtube.com there is a channel called The Gay Women channel and they have been known to do confrontational related things to promote equal rights. This video is one of my favorites because it takes homophobic people and (when they're willing) have them hug someone they have a "fear" over. The result shown here is very heartwarming (most of the time).
